School Breakfast Program Feeds Fewer Than Half of DC’s Low-Income Students

The latest U. S. Department of Agriculture’s food security report tells us that 16.7 million children live in families who can’t always afford to feed them enough of the right kinds of foods for a healthy, balanced diet. Many of them–and other children as well–start their school day unready to learn because they’re hungry.

Ease Restrictions on Hens!

Domestic hens are essentially banned from the vast majority of neighborhoods.

Sign our petition calling upon DC City Council to consider easing restrictions on domestic hens. Let’s hold public hearings to establish the facts about this issue. This is a common-sense change that will help DC residents grow more of their food locally and sustainably.

“Healthy Schools”: Where’s the Money?

With all the complaining about bad school food and kids becoming obese, it’s the rare local government that actually steps forward to pay for improving school food beyond what the federal government subsidizes, currently $2.68 per meal, an amount experts agree is woefully inadequate to serve truly healthful food.

The “Healthy Schools” legislation introduced last week in the D.C. Council is somewhat of an exception.
