The DC Food For All is a forum for eaters and advocates , growers and wonks. It’s about shelves and menus, and gardeners and bloggers working to bring healthy, sustainable and affordable food to all.
We’re here to talk about the ways that DC residents get food, and the ways they eat it. Those ways are changing.
We can taste some of the differences in our communities. In some of our neighborhoods we see new markets opening at a rapid pace; in others, it’s hard to find fresh produce for sale anywhere.
We can see similar disparities in the health of our residents. One out of every five children in DC lives at risk of hunger. One in three children here are overweight or obese. These are signs of food insecurity in our community, and that impacts the quality of life for us all.
Many people are seeking out better ways to grow, sell, buy, cook, and eat. Collectively, DC residents are increasing our demand for the nutritious and the sustainable. We can create new opportunities at every link in the food chain. We can turn vacant plots of land into fertile gardens; we can recover vast amounts of food that would otherwise go to waste; we can transform passive consumers of processed foodstuffs into active participants in the food process; we can expand and strengthen support to our most vulnerable neighbors.
We’re hungry for change. Working together, we can become a community with enough healthy, sustainable, and affordable food for all.
